Lesson 1

Introduction to Tuning the Oracle Instance

If you have already taken the first course in the Oracle8 Performance Tuning Certification Series, Performance Tuning Basics, much of the information in this module will not be new to you. Because each course is unique, however, make sure, that you read the course-specific information about your exercises and the course project.
This course is the second in the five-part Oracle8 Performance Tuning Certification Series.
This course takes an in-depth look into the memory internals of the Oracle SGA.
You will learn how to identify and diagnose Oracle memory performance problems, including problems in the library cache, data buffer cache, and data dictionary cache.
Once you complete this second course, you will be able to handle any SGA-related slowdown, and will have a set of pre-written SQL scripts that you can use to quickly identify performance problems. The course enables you to have a firm understanding of Oracle SGA structures and be able to understand the internal memory mechanisms of the Oracle RDBMS database.
This series of courses will also prepare you to pass Exam 4 in the Database Administrator Track of the Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) exam series.

The five-part series
The five courses in the series allow you to delve in detail into the various concepts that comprise Oracle performance tuning.
  1. Performance Tuning Basics
  2. Tuning the Oracle Instance

  4. Tuning the External Oracle Environment
  5. Advanced Oracle Tuning Concepts

Course goals
After completing this second course, you will have the skills necessary to:
  1. Tune the Oracle shared pool
  2. Tune the data buffer cache
  3. Tune Oracle rollback segments
  4. Tune Oracle redo mechanisms
  5. Monitor and detect lock contention
  6. Identify Oracle sort operations
If you want to read more about the Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) program and learn the best strategies for passing the OCP exams, you can download ocpexam.pdf from the Resources page. If you have already taken the first course in this series, then you may already be somewhat familiar with this material. In either case, this PDF file provides you with a helpful resource for preparing to pass an OCP.
In keeping with its commitment to provide standards for technical competency, Oracle has given the exams associated with the Oracle Certified Professional Program a huge amount of internal Oracle support. The company provides in-depth technical specifications and sample exams to assist candidates in preparing for certification.
The next lesson outlines the prerequisites for this course.
