Oracle 26ai Backup Strategy - Exercise

Objective: Choose a backup and availability strategy for an online business and justify its recovery coverage.

Scenario: House-O-Pets

House-O-Pets sells pet products online. An Oracle AI Database 26ai application PDB stores its sales and inventory. Customers place orders throughout the day and night, so the business wants continuous service and minimal interruption during recovery.

The business has not yet specified its acceptable data loss (RPO) or maximum service interruption (RTO). Do not invent these as agreed requirements. Assume a supported environment with the required licensing, administrative access, backup storage and a separate site available for a physical standby. Plan backup and Data Guard protection for the CDB that contains the application PDB.

This is a written planning exercise. Describe the design and its verification; you do not need to execute backup, shutdown or failover commands.

Choose among three strategies

  1. Use only a nightly Data Pump export and run the database in NOARCHIVELOG mode.
  2. Use scheduled online RMAN backups in ARCHIVELOG mode, protect the required archived redo and recovery dependencies, and maintain a physical standby at a separate site. Monitor and test both recovery paths. Use Data Pump separately when logical exports are required.
  3. Shut down the database every night for a consistent cold backup, run in NOARCHIVELOG mode, and maintain no standby.

Your tasks

  1. Select the best starting strategy and explain why the other two are unsuitable as the sole protection for this business.
  2. Describe backup scope, redo protection, storage separation, retention, scheduling, monitoring and recovery dependencies. Identify which decisions require the business RPO and RTO.
  3. Explain standby preparation, ongoing redo transport and apply, and how role transitions and application reconnection will be tested.
  4. Describe validation and a restore/recover drill. Explain why a successful backup or a running standby does not prove the business recovery objectives are met.

Self-assessment: 15 points

Compare your response with the model solution. Free-text responses are not automatically graded. Award up to 10 points for the selected plan and up to 5 points for its explanation.

CriterionPoints
Select option 2 and include online RMAN backups in ARCHIVELOG mode with protected required redo.4
Protect recovery metadata, encryption access and backup copies outside the primary failure domain; choose retention and scheduling from requirements.2
Include a prepared physical standby with monitored transport/apply and tested role and service transitions.2
Include backup validation and a timed restore/recover exercise with application checks.2
Explain how the plan supports availability and why nightly exports or cold backups alone are insufficient for this scenario.2
Distinguish backup recoverability from standby availability and avoid a zero-downtime or zero-data-loss guarantee.2
Identify the missing business RPO and RTO and require agreement before finalizing the plan.1

Hints

Online backups support continued database operation. A standby can support availability after a primary failure, while retained backups support other recovery needs. Neither feature removes the need to measure recovery or verify data correctness.
